Jesus appoints twelve apostles, and begins the Sermon on the Mount

MATTHEW

10:2 Now the names of the twelve apostles are these.

The first, Simon, who is called Peter; Andrew, his brother; James the son of Zebedee; John, his brother; 10:3 Philip; Bartholomew; Thomas; Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus; Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus; 10:4 Simon the Canaanite; and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.

5:1 Seeing the multitudes, he went up onto the mountain. When he had sat down, his disciples came to him.

5:2 He opened his mouth and taught them, saying,

5:3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.* 5:4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.** 5:5 Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth.

* Isaiah 57:15; 66:2  **Isaiah 61:2; 66:10,13

MARK

3:14 He appointed twelve, that they might be with him, and that he might send them out to preach, 3:15 and to have authority to heal sicknesses and to cast out demons: 3:16 Simon, to whom he gave the name Peter; 3:17 James the son of Zebedee; John, the brother of James, and he surnamed them Boanerges, which means, Sons of Thunder; 3:18 Andrew; Philip; Bartholomew; Matthew; Thomas; James, the son of Alphaeus; Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot; 3:19a and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.

LUKE

twelve, whom he also named apostles:

6:14 Simon, whom he also named Peter; Andrew, his brother; James; John; Philip; Bartholomew;  6:15 Matthew; Thomas; James, the son of Alphaeus; Simon, who was called the Zealot;  6:16 Judas the son of James; and Judas Iscariot, who also became a traitor.

6:17 He came down with them, and stood on a level place, with a crowd of his disciples, and a great number of the people from all Judea and Jerusalem, and the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; 6:18 as well as those who were troubled by unclean spirits, and they were being healed. 6:19 All the multitude sought to touch him, for power came out from him and healed them all.

6:20 He lifted up his eyes to his disciples, and said,

"Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the Kingdom of God.
